Best  Roses for Northern Nevada
and the Eastern Sierras

Ann Marie Harris, ARS Master Consulting Rosarian
with contributions from Dinah O'Brien, Teresa Atkinson,
Diane Stortz-Lintz, Rebecca Geishaker-Chlebus, and Nancy Helsel

The climate of our region plus local conditions such as soil, water, and protection from the sun and wind make choosing rose varieties that will thrive in our gardens a bit more difficult than choosing varieties that thrive in other regions.  This section should help you make more educated decisions about your rose selections and increase your success rate.

When selecting rose varities keep in mind the following thoughts:

Learn What to Plant Where
Learn What You Like
Pick a Winning Variety
Rose Selections from Reno Rose Society Members
Get a Good Plan

Learn What to Plant Where
Learning what to plant where goes back to the thoughts presented in the sections Where Are We??? and soils.   Even a cursery knowledge of your local gardening conditions can help you make better decisions.   The other thing that helps is knowing how some roses grow.

Learn What You Like
Learning what you like boils down to going out and looking a lots of roses, asking questions,  and knowing a little bit about the different types of roses.

Pick a Winner
A winner is not necessarily an exhibition rose that always wins Queen of Show.  A winner is a rose that you like and one that performs well in your garden.  You may also have potential Queen quality if that is the variety rose that you happen to like.  There are resources available to you to help you "pick a winner":
Rose Show June 19th
