Rose Care Calendar
The following is a generalized calendar for rose care in the Truckee Meadows. Your local growing conditions and sun exposure may allow you to shift pruning and fertilizing times by up to a month. For example, if you live at a lower elevation with warmer weather, you may need to prune earlier than March 20th.

Intermittently water to keep soil from drying out if there has been no rain or snow.
If you use sprays, time for dormant spray (6 weeks after previous sprays). |

Keep up the watering if there has been no rain or snow. |
| March |
Check your garden tools and make sure they are sharpened. |
| March 20 - April 15 |
Time to Prune!!! And time to cleanup all old leaves & canes.
Last dormant season spray.
Begin growing season fertilizing with N-P-K, micronutrients and if you use it, Epsom salt.
Add agricultural sulfur if your soil pH is alkaline (>7.5).
Plant bare-root roses.
Check your irrigation systems for breaks & leaks.
Check emitters for each rose to be sure each one has enough water.
Renew your mulch.
For a pruning brush-up, go to the annual pruning demonstration. |

Begin grooming & pinching back for show.
Monitor roses for developing pests & diseases. |
| mid-June |
Peak bloom time. Enjoy your roses & come to the Annual Rose Show hosted by the Reno Rose Society. |
| Summer |
Continue fertilizing. |
| August |
Aug 1st Last date for long-release fertilizer application.
Can apply short time release (10-14 day) ferlizers up to August 20th. |
| September 15 |
Average first frost date. |
| October-November |
Shut down irrigation system. |
| November-December |
After first hard frost, garden cleanup & first dormant season spray. |
