Diane's Picks
Horticulturist for the Reno Municipal Rose Garden quoted in a recent article "Reno Loves Roses" by Doresa Banning in the 2007 Nevada Magazine:
“If you don’t do anything to them—you never prune, barely water, and barely fertilize—you still get roses,” says Dianne Stortz-Lintz, a horticulturist who manages the Reno Municipal Rose Garden for the City of Reno. “They actually are one of the better, easy-care landscape plants. If you want to keep the bugs off and bring the flowers in the house, they’re a little bit fussy. Otherwise, you can pretty much ignore them.”
After tending to the more than 1,750 roses (200-plus varieties) in the Reno Municipal Rose Garden, Stortz-Lintz doesn’t want to deal with her own 8 rose bushes, she says. Each year she cuts them to the ground with a chainsaw. She doesn’t fertilize or spray them with pesticides. Yet, they keep growing back and producing roses.
Roses that thrive in Northern Nevada include Crimson Bouquet, Brigadoon, Peace Rose, Bonica, Pink Simplicity, and Iceberg, according to Stortz-Lintz.

Nancy's Picks
Nancy Helsel has been a participating member of our Society since the early 1990s.  She has won many blue ribbons and the Graves Nugget Sweepstakes Perpetual Trophy at least once.  She is shown above with her Playboy entry that won the O'Brien Perpetual Trophy for Best Floribunda.  Her favorite roses are mini-floras and miniatures.  She lives in northern Spanish Springs Valley and recommends the following roses:
Hybrid Teas:  Dainty Bess, Gemini, Love &amp Peace, Sheer Bliss
Floribundas: Betty Boop, Eureka, Fourth of July, Hot Cocoa, Nicole, Playboy
Polyanthas: La Marne
Climbers: Dortmund
Old Garden Roses: Charles de Mills, Comte de Chambord, Louise Odier, R. gallica versicolor, Sombreuil
Shrubs:  English Garden, Flutterbye, Heritage, Tamora,  Sally Holmes, Ballerina
Miniatures & Mini-floras: Adams Smile, Gizmo, Hot Tamale, Jeannie Lajoie, Kristin, Miss Flippins, Nozomi, Overnight Sensation (RRS 2008 ARS Princess), Santa Claus, X-Rated
Mini-Floras: Buttercream, Nancy Jean

Rebecca's Picks
Rebecca Geishaker-Chlebus lives in Cold Springs Valley.  The climate there is a major challenge to rose growing.  She does not have any hybrid teas that do well.  Her bloom date is a month after the dates of those who live in central and old southwest Reno and Fallon.
Floribundas:  Angel Face, Sunsprite
Climbers:  Joseph's Coat
Old Garden Roses:  Cardinal Richelieu (hybrid Gallica)
